WHAT'S INCLUDED
Rendering That Stands Up To The Weather
Render is the first line of defence between your walls and the weather, so a poor mix or a rushed application shows up fast as cracking, staining or patches that blow off the wall. Jamie PlasterPerfect applies traditional sand and cement render, modern silicone and monocouche systems, and repairs or re-renders existing walls that have failed, across Stourbridge and the surrounding Black Country. We work on everything from solid-wall Victorian terraces that need a breathable finish to newer cavity-wall semis and extensions taking a modern through-colour render.
A traditional two-coat render, sound and cost-effective for most standard walls and outbuildings.
Through-coloured, low-maintenance modern render systems that shrug off dirt and rarely need repainting.
Cracked, blown or hollow-sounding render stripped back and replaced before the damage reaches the brickwork behind it.
Dated pebbledash stripped off and replaced with a smooth modern render finish, or re-dashed to match.
THE DETAIL
Choosing The Right Render System
Sand & Cement vs K Rend, Silicone & Monocouche
Traditional sand and cement render is a two-coat system, a scratch coat followed by a float coat, applied by hand and finished with a texture before being painted. It's well proven and cost-effective, but the finish colour comes from paint on top, which means repainting every several years to keep it looking right. K Rend, silicone render and monocouche systems are through-coloured, the colour is mixed into the render itself rather than painted on afterwards, applied over a basecoat with a reinforcing mesh embedded in it. They cost more upfront but resist dirt and algae staining noticeably better and rarely need repainting, which is why they've become the standard choice on most new-build and extension work.
New-Build Versus Older Solid-Wall Properties
What's right for a modern cavity-wall semi isn't automatically right for a Victorian or Edwardian solid-wall house. Newer cavity walls handle a standard cement-based or silicone render system without issue. Older solid-wall properties are different, they rely on moisture being able to pass through the wall and evaporate, and sealing that wall behind a dense, impermeable cement render traps moisture instead of letting it out, which shows up later as damp on the inside face of the wall. We assess the property type before recommending a system, not just quote whatever's quickest to apply.
Breathability Matters More Than People Realise
A breathable render, typically a lime-based mix or a specific breathable render system designed for solid walls, allows moisture to escape gradually rather than building up behind an impermeable coating. Getting this wrong on an older property is one of the most common causes of damp problems that get blamed on "bad render" a few years down the line, when the real issue is the wrong system was used on the wrong wall type from the start.
Weather & Curing Windows
Render needs the right conditions to cure properly. Spring through to early autumn is the reliable window, the temperature and humidity let each coat cure at the right rate. We won't render in frost or heavy rain, applying render in the wrong conditions doesn't just slow the job down, it causes the render to cure incorrectly, leading to cracking and a weaker bond that fails well before it should. Cooler-weather application is sometimes possible with the right additives and protection, and we'll tell you honestly if the conditions aren't right rather than pushing ahead anyway.
WORTH A LOOK
Signs Your Render Needs Attention
Hairline or spreading cracks let water in behind the render, where it can reach the brickwork.
Tap the wall, a dull hollow sound instead of solid means the render has lost its bond and will eventually fall away.
Dark streaks or green patches usually mean water is sitting on or running down the render rather than shedding off it.
Damp patches on an internal wall behind a rendered elevation often trace back to failed render outside.
Even sound-looking render reaches the end of its working life eventually and is worth having checked.
A common reason homeowners call us, stripping it back for a smooth modern finish transforms a house front.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does exterior rendering cost in Stourbridge?
It depends on the size of the wall area, the render system you choose and the condition of what's underneath. We always give a free, itemised quote before any work starts, never a guess over the phone.
What's the difference between sand and cement render and K Rend or silicone render?
Sand and cement is a traditional painted render, cost-effective and well proven. K Rend and silicone systems are through-coloured, so the colour doesn't rely on paint, and they resist dirt and algae better over time, usually for a higher upfront cost.
Can you render over my existing pebbledash?
Sometimes, if the pebbledash is sound and well-bonded. More often we strip it back first, since rendering over loose or hollow pebbledash just traps the problem underneath a new finish.
Why has my render cracked or started blowing off the wall?
Usually a mix that was too strong for the background, water getting in behind the render, or movement in the wall itself. We'll tell you the actual cause on a visit rather than just re-rendering over the same problem.
What time of year can rendering be done?
Spring through to early autumn is ideal. Render can still be applied in cooler weather with the right additives and protection, but we won't render in frost or heavy rain, it doesn't cure properly and fails faster.
Do older solid-wall houses need a different type of render?
Often yes. Solid-wall Victorian and Edwardian properties need a breathable render so moisture can escape rather than getting trapped, which is different from a standard cement render on a modern cavity wall. We'll advise on the right system for your property.
Do I need planning permission to render my house?
Most re-rendering in a similar colour and finish doesn't need permission. If your property is listed, in a conservation area, or you're changing the appearance significantly, it's worth checking with your local council first, we can point you in the right direction when we quote.
How long does render take to dry before I can paint it?
Traditional sand and cement render usually needs several weeks to fully cure before painting, longer in cold or wet weather. Through-coloured systems like K Rend don't need painting at all. We'll give you a realistic timeframe for your job.
Can you match the render on an extension to the rest of the house?
Yes, matching texture and colour on extensions is one of our most common jobs, we'll bring samples so you can compare before we start.
Do you offer a guarantee on rendering work?
Yes, ask us for the specifics when you get your quote, we stand behind the finish we leave.
What areas do you cover for rendering?
Stourbridge and the surrounding Black Country and South Birmingham towns, see our full coverage area or just ask, if your town isn't listed we may still cover it.
