THE DETAIL
Dot-And-Dab Or Studwork: Which Method Fits Your Job
Dot & Dab vs Stud Partitions
Dot and dab fixes plasterboard directly onto an existing solid masonry wall using adhesive dabs, it's the fast route to a flat, paintable surface on brick or block without adding much thickness to the room. A stud partition is a different job, a new timber or metal frame is built first to create a wall where there wasn't one, then boarded on both sides. That's the method used to divide a room, close off a new opening, or box in pipework and services, since the stud cavity gives you space to run cables or fit insulation that dot and dab simply doesn't allow for.
Insulated Plasterboard For Solid Walls
Thermal laminate boards, plasterboard bonded to a layer of rigid insulation on the back, are fitted the same way as standard dot and dab but add a real thermal upgrade to a cold solid-wall room. It's a popular option on Victorian and Edwardian properties where external wall insulation isn't practical or would change the outside appearance of the house, since it warms the room up noticeably without losing much floor space and without touching the exterior at all.
Soundproofing Considerations
A single layer of plasterboard on a stud wall does very little to stop noise passing through. Real soundproofing comes from the combination of an insulation infill inside the stud cavity, acoustic-rated plasterboard, and in some cases resilient bars or a double layer of board with staggered joints so there's no direct path for sound to travel through. If noise between rooms or from next door is the actual problem you're trying to solve, it's worth telling us that upfront so we can specify the right build-up rather than a standard partition that won't make much difference.
When Dry Lining Beats Wet Plaster
Boarding a wall is considerably faster than building it up in multiple wet coats, and the drying time is more predictable, a skim coat over boards still needs its normal drying period, but you're not waiting on backing coats to cure first. It's also easier to chase in insulation, cabling or services within a stud cavity than to disturb a finished wet-plastered wall later. Where dry lining doesn't necessarily win is on very uneven old solid walls, where wet plastering can sometimes correct bigger irregularities more directly, we'll tell you honestly which approach suits your specific wall.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between dot and dab and a stud partition wall?
Dot and dab fixes plasterboard directly onto an existing solid wall using adhesive dabs. A stud partition builds a new timber or metal frame first, then boards it, used when you're creating a wall that wasn't there before, like splitting a room or boxing in pipework.
How much does dry lining cost?
It depends on the wall area, whether it's dot and dab or a new stud wall, and whether insulated boards are used. We always give a free, itemised quote before starting.
What are the benefits of insulated dry lining over standard plasterboard?
Insulated boards add a thermal layer behind the plasterboard, which noticeably warms up a cold solid-wall room and can cut heat loss, without touching the outside of the house or needing planning permission in most cases.
Does dry lining need to be skimmed afterwards?
For a proper paint-ready finish, yes. A skim coat over the boards covers joints, screw heads and seams so the wall reads as one smooth surface rather than visible board lines.
How long does it take for a skimmed dry-lined wall to dry before painting?
Usually 3-5 days in a well-ventilated room, longer in cold or damp weather. We'll give you a realistic estimate for your specific job.
Can dry lining help with noise between rooms or from a neighbouring property?
A stud partition with insulation inside it and the right board specification does improve sound insulation noticeably compared to a single skin of plasterboard. Ask us about acoustic board options if that's the priority.
Can you run new sockets or chase in cables before boarding?
We can coordinate around electrical work, though the actual wiring needs a qualified electrician. Tell us what's planned and we'll sequence the job so sockets and switches land in the right place.
Is dry lining quicker than traditional wet plastering?
Boarding itself is faster than building up a wall in wet plaster, though the skim coat on top still needs its normal drying time before decorating. Overall it's usually a quicker route to a finished wall.
Can dry lining hide damp or damaged walls?
No, not properly. Boarding over an active damp problem just hides it behind the new wall and it will resurface. We'll flag any damp issue and point you to the right fix before boarding.
Do you offer a guarantee on dry lining work?
Yes, ask us for the specifics when you get your quote, we stand behind the finish we leave.
What areas do you cover for dry lining?
Stourbridge and the surrounding Black Country and South Birmingham towns, see our full coverage area or just ask, if your town isn't listed we may still cover it.
