WHAT'S INCLUDED
Plastering & Skimming, Done Properly
Plastering and skimming is the finish that makes or breaks a room, a flat, even surface that takes paint, wallpaper or a skim coat without shadowing, cracking or blowing later. Jamie PlasterPerfect skims new plasterboard, re-skims tired or cracked walls and ceilings, strips old artex, and repairs damaged plaster before it's re-finished, across Stourbridge and the surrounding Black Country.
A single smooth skim coat over freshly boarded walls and ceilings, ready to paint once fully cured.
Cracked, blown or damp-damaged plaster stripped back and re-skimmed to a flat, lasting finish.
Textured ceilings skimmed flat or overboarded, bringing a dated room up to a modern standard.
Socket alterations, hairline cracks and minor damage made good and blended invisibly into the existing wall.
THE DETAIL
Skim Coat Or Full Re-Plaster: What Your Walls Actually Need
Skim Coat vs Full Re-Plaster
A skim coat is a single thin finishing layer, usually 2-3mm, trowelled over sound plasterboard or existing plaster to give a smooth, paint-ready surface. It's what goes over new boarding, or over an existing wall that's still structurally sound underneath. A full re-plaster is a different job entirely, the old plaster is hacked off back to brick or block and built back up with a browning or bonding coat first, then finished with a skim on top. We only recommend a full re-plaster when the backing coat has actually failed, not as a default upsell, a lot of jobs that come in as "the whole wall needs doing" turn out to only need a re-skim once we've had a proper look.
Drying Times, Done Honestly
A skim coat over sound plasterboard typically needs 3-5 days to dry fully in a normally ventilated room before it's safe to paint, longer in cold or damp weather, a dehumidifier speeds this up but won't replace proper time. A full re-plaster with a fresh browning coat underneath takes considerably longer, each coat needs to properly cure before the next goes on, and painting too early on a re-plastered wall is one of the most common causes of new paint bubbling or picking off. We'll give you a realistic timeframe for your specific job rather than a generic number.
Why Artex Removal Comes Up So Often
Textured ceilings were fitted in huge numbers of UK homes through the 1970s and 80s, partly because it was quick to apply and hid uneven boarding underneath. It's dated badly and most homeowners want it gone when they renovate. If your property was built or decorated before 2000, it's worth having the artex checked before anything is disturbed, older textured coatings can contain asbestos and shouldn't be sanded or dry-scraped without it being confirmed safe first. Once that's established we either skim directly over sound artex or strip it back if it's damaged, either way you end up with a flat modern ceiling.
A Good Skim Job vs A Bad One
A good skim reads flat under raking light from a window or lamp, no shadowing, no visible trowel lines once it's painted, and the wall doesn't sound hollow when you tap it. A bad job shows up in a few recognisable ways: blowing, where the plaster has lost its bond to the backing and sounds hollow or eventually crumbles away, usually caused by damp or poor preparation before skimming; cracking, often a single coat applied too thick and left to dry too fast, or shrinkage cracks from the wrong mix; and pin-holing, small pitted holes left in the surface from trapped air or moisture that wasn't worked out properly during trowelling. Any of these is a sign the prep or the technique was rushed, not just bad luck.
WORTH A LOOK
Signs You Need Re-Plastering Or A Skim
Hairline cracks that keep coming back after filling usually mean movement behind the plaster, not just the paint.
A dull, hollow knock instead of a solid sound means the plaster has lost its bond to the wall behind it.
Discoloured patches or a persistent damp smell point to moisture getting into the plaster, worth investigating before re-skimming.
Plaster that's soft, chalky or coming away when you touch it has failed and needs stripping back, not just filling.
A textured ceiling that's dating the room is one of the most common reasons homeowners call us.
New boarding from an extension, loft conversion or rewire needs skimming before it can be decorated.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does plastering and skimming cost in Stourbridge?
It depends on room size, how many walls and ceilings, and the condition of what's underneath. We'll always give you a free, itemised quote before any work starts, no ballpark guesses over the phone.
How long does a skim coat take to dry before painting?
A typical skim needs 3-5 days to dry fully in a well-ventilated room before it's safe to paint, longer in cold or damp weather. We'll tell you a realistic timeframe for your job, not a generic number.
Can you remove artex from my ceilings?
Yes, we either skim directly over sound artex or strip it back first if it's damaged, then finish with a smooth modern skim.
Do you plaster over damp patches?
No, not without dealing with the cause first. Plastering over an active damp problem just hides it and it will fail again, we'll flag it and point you to the right fix before we skim.
Do I need to move my furniture before you arrive?
Small items help if moved clear of the walls, but we protect floors and any larger furniture that can't be moved with dust sheets as standard.
Can you match an existing textured or patterned ceiling?
We can, though most customers use a repair as the moment to go smooth and modern instead, we'll talk through both options on the visit.
Do you skim new plasterboard or only re-skim old walls?
Both. New-build boarding, extensions and re-skims of existing tired walls and ceilings are all routine jobs for us.
How many coats of skim will my wall need?
Almost always two thin coats trowelled to a flat, even finish, a single thick coat is more likely to crack as it dries.
Do you offer a guarantee on plastering work?
Yes, ask us for the specifics when you get your quote, we stand behind the finish we leave.
What areas do you cover for plastering and skimming?
Stourbridge and the surrounding Black Country and South Birmingham towns, see our full coverage area or just ask, if your town isn't listed we may still cover it.
Do you provide free quotes?
Always. Call, WhatsApp or use the contact form with a few details or photos and we'll come back to you with a clear price.
